The World Health Organization (WHO) has updated its guidelines for the prevention of dementia, listing specific factors through which individuals can lower their personal risk.

Background: 57 million affected worldwide

According to the WHO, around 57 million people worldwide live with a form of dementia, and the number continues to rise. Against this backdrop, the organization has revised its recommendations, which were last comprehensively updated in 2019. As was the case then, the experts in Geneva see no scientifically proven benefit from dietary supplements for prevention.

Up to 45 percent of dementia risk can be attributed to factors that humans can influence, it said. The WHO thereby underscores that prevention does not depend solely on age or genetic predisposition, but also on behavioral and lifestyle factors.
