Austria's Education Minister Christoph Wiederkehr wants to propose a "hitzefrei" policy for schools and is aiming for a uniform nationwide solution.
Currently, there is no legal basis in Austria to give schools "hitzefrei." This emerges from an APA press release. Wiederkehr spoke out in favor of a uniform policy and emphasized: "Ich möchte keine unterschiedlichen Regelungen je nach Bundesland, sondern eine bundesweite Lösung."
The topic of "hitzefrei" does not fundamentally appear in the School Time Act, as the press release states. The School Time Act dates back to an era without permanently hot June weeks. According to APA information, the law only provides that "bei Unbenützbarkeit des Schulgebäudes, in Katastrophenfällen und aus sonstigen zwingenden oder aus im öffentlichen Interesse gelegenen Gründen" the responsible school authority can close the school for a maximum of three days. For compulsory schools, the state authorities can enact regulations.
