Wiener Linien will discontinue the "Ring, Volkstheater U" stop on Line D on July 13 and rename it to "Parlament, U Volkstheater," because the Volkstheater and Rathausplatz stops are only about 200 meters apart.
The station is being discontinued because the neighboring stops are already close together, Wiener Linien announced. "Laut Analysen werden die nahen Stationen ‚Ring, Volkstheater U' und ‚Rathausplatz, Burgtheater' deutlich stärker genutzt," was given as the reasoning. In the future, the stop at the Volkstheater will be called "Parlament, U Volkstheater" "damit das Parlament weiter klar im Netzplan sichtbar bleibt".
By discontinuing the station, passengers on all Ring lines will save more than 200,000 hours per year, according to Wiener Linien calculations. Line D will thus lose one stop and will in the future only have 31 stops instead of the previous 32. The stop on Kärntner Ring is also being fine-tuned: a green phase extended by 20 seconds is intended to allow two tram sets to pass instead of just one.
