Vienna, July 20, 2026

Peter Weinelt, chief of Wiener Stadtwerke, has described investments in renewable energy as the central lever for hedging against global supply crises, while at the same time reaffirming the further departure from fossil heating systems in Vienna by 2040.

Peter Weinelt views the current turmoil on global energy markets in the context of the Iran war with relative composure. The impact on physical gas supply is not comparable to 2022, he told APA. Back then, Russia's attack on Ukraine had plunged Europe into a severe energy crisis. The difference between then and now is: "Es ist wirklich gelungen, LNG-Terminals et cetera und den Lieferantenkreis auszuweiten," said Weinelt.
