The WMO report describes the increase in atmospheric CO2 levels measured in 2025 as a new record high.
Atmospheric CO2 levels reached a new high in 2025, according to a report by the World Meteorological Organization (WMO). This further places the continuing emission of greenhouse gases at the center of the international climate debate.
The WMO compiles data on trends in greenhouse gas concentrations in its report. The focus is on the concentration of carbon dioxide, or CO2, in the atmosphere. The record high recorded in 2025 underscores the urgency of further emission reductions.
Reducing methane emissions is said to be particularly effective in the short term. Oksana Tarasova explains: "Wenn man kurzfristig etwas machen will, dann muss man sich das Gas vornehmen, das kurzfristig in der Atmosphäre reagiert - das ist Methan."
