The UN Environment Programme (UNEP) has presented a report in Nairobi warning against permanently exceeding the 1.5-degree warming limit and calling on governments to take immediate action.

The UN Environment Programme (UNEP) presented its new report on the state of global warming on Wednesday in Nairobi. In it, the authors warn that any exceedance of the 1.5-degree mark must be kept as short as possible. Should the global average temperature remain permanently above this threshold, irreversible damage to ecosystems and societies worldwide would be imminent.

Inger Andersen stressed at the presentation of the report that every fraction of a degree matters. She pointed to a growing number of extreme weather events that are already having massive consequences for people and the environment. The report also shows that global greenhouse gas emissions have still not been reduced visibly enough to avert the worst-case scenarios.
