In Philadelphia, Ivory Coast and Ecuador played out a low-scoring but intense duel in front of 68,274 spectators. John Yeboah (16th minute) and Alan Minda (23rd minute) each hit only the crossbar for Ecuador, while Enner Valencia fired a shot off the outside of the post shortly after the break. At the other end, Elye Wahi also struck the woodwork in the 52nd minute. It was not until the 90th minute that substitute Amad Diallo rescued the Ivorians with a precise shot into the corner to make it 1:0.

Oranje Drop Points

In the second match of the evening, the Netherlands and Japan drew 2:2. Captain Virgil van Dijk gave Oranje the lead in the 50th minute, and Crysencio Summerville extended the advantage to 2:0 in the 64th minute. Spain Without Yamal in the Starting Lineup

Spain will begin its match against Cape Verde without its star Lamine Yamal. The 18-year-old attacker from FC Barcelona picked up a thigh injury in April and has only been back in team training for about a week. Coach Luis de la Fuente explained: „Die gute Nachricht ist, dass Lamine sehr fit ist. Er ist in guter Form und trainiert sehr gut. Er steht zur Verfügung, aber er kann nicht von Anfang an spielen." Uruguay's Delayed Arrival

Off the pitch, the World Cup night also made headlines. Uruguay's flight to Miami Gardens for their first group match on Tuesday (kickoff 12:00 a.m., live on ZDF and MagentaTV) was delayed due to a handling error during departure from Cancún. FIFA stated: „Die Fluggesellschaft hat sich für die entstandenen Unannehmlichkeiten entschuldigt." Back at the 2010 World Cup in South Africa, Uruguay's arrival for their first group match was also accompanied by a flight delay. Uruguay is coached by Marcelo Bielsa.
