Vienna, 14 July 2026
The environmental organization WWF has demonstrated in a study presented on Tuesday, covering ten years of documented seizures, that poaching and illegal trade pose the greatest threat to the already rare sturgeon species in the Lower Danube.
Data Basis and Key Findings
For the report, the WWF evaluated data from the 2016 to 2025 analysis period. The basis was official seizures of sturgeon, illegal fishing gear, meat, and caviar, which the WWF collected and analyzed over ten years. According to the study, it documents over 500 cases of sturgeon poaching and illegal trade.
According to the information, authorities seized approximately six and a half tonnes of sturgeon meat and whole fish over the entire study period. In addition, more than 263 kilograms of caviar were confiscated. In one individual case, investigators seized approximately 40 kilograms of caviar with an estimated value of 46,500 euros. Individual cases involved well over 100 killed animals.
