Seoul, July 9, 2026
South Korea's Supreme Court on Thursday upheld the seven-year prison sentence against former President Yoon Suk-yeol for obstruction of justice and further charges in connection with the short-lived imposition of martial law in December 2024.
In a televised hearing, a Supreme Court justice stated on Thursday that all appeals against the verdict would be rejected. The lower court's decision contained no errors, it was said. With this ruling, the sentence is now final.
Background: Only hours of martial law
The case stems from the imposition of martial law by Yoon on December 3, 2024, which lasted only a few hours. The measure had plunged the country into a severe political crisis. It came against the backdrop of a conflict between the government and the opposition-dominated parliament over the budget.
