Berlin, 09 July 2026
The head of the Junge Union Berlin, Harald Burkart, has called on the Governing Mayor Kai Wegner (CDU) to refrain from running again as the CDU's top candidate for the state election on 20 September.
Burkart told the news portal The Pioneer that Wegner should "today unambiguously declare that he will no longer run as the top candidate for the office of Governing Mayor." A withdrawal by Wegner could "enable a strong substantive agenda – on housing construction, on the economy, and on internal security." Instead, someone should run who is "unassailable in his personal integrity."
The demand was triggered by a Tagesspiegel report according to which the Senate Chancellery had to provide information about Wegner's crisis management on the day of the Berlin power outage in January, following a temporary injunction by the Administrative Court. According to the report, on the morning of 3 January, contrary to initial claims, Wegner did not conduct any official phone calls. "Rather, the exchange took place via text messages," the Senate Chancellery told the newspaper.
