Hamburg, 03 August 2026

German tennis professional Alexander Zverev has criticized the expansion of the Masters 1000 tournaments to up to 13 days and demanded a return to the previous one-week format, after numerous top stars were once again absent from the ATP 1000 tournament in Montreal.

Zverev spoke plainly about the current structure of the Masters tournaments and described the increased strain as a problem for the players. In the Hamburg native's view, exhausted players could be more easily enticed back into tournaments if the events – which have now grown to eleven, twelve, or even thirteen days – were shortened back to one week, as they were before 2023. «Ich bin mir nicht sicher, ob ihm 50'000 mehr oder weniger etwas ausmachen würden», said Zverev with regard to the discussion about possible incentives.
