Lost bearings in steep terrain

At around 3:15 p.m., the three friends reached a small plateau at an altitude of approximately 2,300 meters above sea level. There, the group decided to turn back. During the subsequent descent, the tragic accident occurred in the very steep, grassy, and rocky terrain.

According to the Krone report, one of the three companions fell "in very steep, grassy and rocky terrain 150 to 200 meters." The police stated: "Er blieb in einer Schotterrinne leblos liegen." The 18-year-old did not survive the fall.

Fall into the scree gully

Immediately after the fall, one of the two companions reacted at once and made an emergency call, according to the police report from Thursday. The other climbed down to the victim. "Einer der Begleiter setzte sofort einen Notruf ab, der andere stieg zu dem Abgestürzten ab und konnte laut Bericht 'keine Lebenszeichen mehr feststellen'."

The 18-year-old could no longer be saved and was recovered by the crew of a police helicopter. "Die Bergung des tödlich abgestürzten 18-Jährigen erfolgte ebenfalls durch die Besatzung des Polizeihubschraubers", the officers concluded. The two uninjured companions were brought to safety by the emergency medical helicopter and then flown down to the valley at Innsbruck by the police helicopter "Libelle."

Rescue by helicopter

The recovery and airlift took place under difficult conditions in the steep, scree-covered terrain. The two companions were brought by the crew of an emergency medical helicopter to the mountain station of the Hungerburgbahn. From there, with the assistance of the police helicopter "Libelle," they were flown further down into the valley to Innsbruck.

The police explicitly pointed out in their report that the men were traveling "in sehr steilem und weglosem Gelände" and lost their bearings there. The officers emphasized that the decision to continue ascending toward the summit cross in unfamiliar terrain had fatal consequences.

According to police information, the victim was a Hungarian citizen. No further details about the identity of the 18-year-old were initially released. No further information was published regarding the identity of the two companions who physically survived the accident unharmed.
