A 19-year-old hiker suffered a fatal accident on Tuesday morning on the Großer Traunstein (1,943 meters) in the Salzburg Tennengebirge.
The accident occurred on Tuesday morning in the municipality of Abtenau in the district of Hallein (Tennengau). According to police, the young man was hiking alone at the current stage of the investigation when he fell in the area of the Großer Traunstein, which at 1,943 meters is one of the highest peaks of the Tennengebirge.
The Großer Traunstein is a well-known but alpine and exposed mountain peak on the edge of the Tennengebirge. The normal route leads over partly cable-secured passages and requires, in addition to fitness, surefootedness and a head for heights. During the summer months, mountain rescue operations regularly take place there because hikers underestimate the difficulty of the route.
