A 19-year-old vacationer fell around 30 meters deep in the Ötschergräben in the district of Lilienfeld in Lower Austria on Tuesday and was taken to hospital by helicopter.

Course of the accident

According to the emergency services, the young man was on a route described as pathless in the area of the Ötschergräben, a popular hiking region around Mariazell and Türnitz. For reasons that have not yet been clarified, he strayed from the path and fell around 30 meters into the depths. Relatives, who reported the 19-year-old as missing, alerted the emergency dispatch centers.

Several alpine rescue teams were alerted simultaneously. An emergency medical helicopter reached the seriously injured man, stabilized him on site and then flew him to the St. Pölten University Hospital. No further details were initially known about the exact diagnosis or the current state of health of the patient.
