A 20-year-old man drowned in the Herner Meer, a popular recreational area on the Rhine-Herne Canal in Herne, on Wednesday evening.

According to police and fire department reports, the young man had been jogging with a companion along the canal around 10:45 p.m. when he entered the water to swim.

Shortly after entering the water, the man called for help. His companion immediately jumped in and attempted to rescue him, but the effort was unsuccessful.

The Rescue Attempt

Emergency services were alerted at approximately 10:45 p.m., triggering a large-scale response from the Herne fire department and police.

Rescue teams searched the canal for the missing swimmer. Despite their efforts, the 20-year-old could only be recovered dead from the water.
