Around 40 industrial groups have sent a letter to European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen and Council President António Costa calling for decisive action against cost developments in the European emissions trading system (EU ETS), which is regarded as the EU's central climate protection instrument on the path to climate neutrality by 2050.

As reported by the Deutsche Presse-Agentur, the letter was sent a few weeks before the EU Commission's planned reform proposals in July. The Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung had previously reported on it. The signatories – including the chemicals groups BASF, Evonik, and Covestro, as well as the steel companies Thyssenkrupp and ArcelorMittal – demand: "Wir fordern ein entschlossenes Eingreifen, um die Kosten-Eskalation im Emissionshandelssystem (ETS) zu stoppen."
