A 68-year-old mountaineer died over the weekend after falling in the Wetterstein Mountains near the Zugspitze, following a multi-day search operation by police and mountain rescue that narrowed down his location.
The man had been missing since 31 July 2026, according to the rescue services, after he had set off on a mountain tour in the Wetterstein Mountains area and did not return. The search for the 68-year-old began immediately once his disappearance became known. Due to the difficult high-altitude terrain and rugged landscape, special units were deployed.
Large-scale search for the missing person
The Alpine Operations Group of the police, the Bavarian police helicopter squadron, and the Garmisch-Partenkirchen mountain rescue service launched a search operation that was only interrupted at night. According to police, the missing person's vehicle was located and the search area was thus narrowed down: "Mit deren Hilfe konnte das Fahrzeug des Vermissten geortet und das Suchgebiet eingegrenzt werden."
