A 63-year-old German mountaineer from Baden-Württemberg was fatally injured on Saturday when he fell approximately 200 meters through extremely steep terrain during a guided tour of the 3,774-meter-high Wildspitze in the Ötztal Alps.

Sequence of the accident

According to police, the accident occurred on Saturday at around 10:45 a.m. in the municipal area of Sölden in Tyrol. As the investigators reported, "kam es im Gemeindegebiet von Sölden in den Ötztaler Alpen zu einem tödlichen Absturz". The group had set out from the Taschachhaus across the Taschachferner toward the summit of the Wildspitze.

At an altitude of approximately 3,700 meters, the 63-year-old, who was climbing third in the rope team, "aus bislang unbekannter Ursache das Gleichgewicht". He then "mit dem Rücken voran durch extrem steiles Gelände rund 200 Meter ab". The mountaineer suffered fatal injuries in the impact.
