Exactly one year after a massive rockslide obliterated the heart of their village, around 500 residents, officials, and guests gathered on the rubble in Blatten, Switzerland, for a solemn memorial service on Thursday.

The ceremony took place precisely where the village center stood before the disaster, a location now transformed into a vast field of debris. The gathering served as a collective moment of remembrance for what was lost and an expression of gratitude for what was spared.

"A year ago, Switzerland stood still," said Federal Councillor Karin Keller-Sutter in her address to the attendees. Her presence underscored the national significance of the tragedy that struck the small community in the Lötschental valley.
