The reason for the closure is three damaged sections in the concrete road surface that, according to Asfinag, "die aus Sicherheitsgründen umgehend repariert werden müssen". Asfinag also justified the decision for a full closure with the current construction site management: "Aufgrund der aktuellen Baustellenführung steht im betroffenen Abschnitt nicht genügend Platz zur Verfügung, um die Arbeiten sicher durchzuführen und gleichzeitig den Verkehr aufrechtzuerhalten." A lane-free option was therefore not possible.

Traffic will be diverted off the motorway at the Haag interchange and routed via the signed detour route along the B1 to the St. Valentin interchange. According to Asfinag, the detour is signed throughout. Commuters and long-distance travelers must expect significantly longer travel times during the affected night.

Detour via the B1

The A1 is one of Austria's most heavily used routes and connects Vienna via St. Pölten, Amstetten, and St. Valentin with Salzburg and onward toward the west. International travel traffic toward Germany also regularly uses the West Autobahn in this section as a feeder route. A closure on the main carriageway in the direction of Salzburg therefore has cross-regional impacts.

In recent weeks, there had already been repeated construction sites and lane-by-lane restrictions on the A1 in the Amstetten area. According to Asfinag, the current closure is a concentrated measure to repair the concrete damage within a single timeframe and to avoid further subsequent closures as much as possible.

Asfinag's recommendations for road users

Asfinag recommends that road users take a wide detour around the Haag interchange and use the signed detour via the B1. Local drivers are asked to bypass the construction area widely. Asfinag publishes current information on the closure and the detour route via its traffic information channels.

According to Asfinag, weather-dependent delays may occur during ongoing concrete work. Should the repairs be completed earlier than planned, an early lifting of the closure is possible. Otherwise, the A1 in the direction of Salzburg will be reopened on schedule by 5:00 a.m. on Friday at the latest.

For traffic in the opposite direction, meaning toward Vienna, there are no restrictions according to Asfinag. The detour routes signed on the B1 are also, according to the operator, sufficiently dimensioned for the expected traffic; however, longer waiting times at the intersections cannot be ruled out.
