On the West Autobahn A1 toward Linz, only one lane was passable between Haag and St. Valentin on Sunday due to heat damage, while ÖAMTC, ASFINAG and ÖBB warned of an increase in heat-related infrastructure damage.
Buckled concrete on the A1
The persistently high temperatures caused the first serious road damage of the summer on the West Autobahn A1 on Sunday. As ASFINAG explained, concrete slabs had expanded due to the extreme heat, pushed against each other and buckled. Such damage is neither foreseeable nor avoidable at these temperatures, ASFINAG emphasized. "Laut ASFINAG haben sich Betonplatten durch die extreme Hitze ausgedehnt, aufeinandergeschoben und gewölbt."
The concrete result was that only one lane remained available on the A1 in the construction area between Haag and St. Valentin in the direction of Linz. „Dort war nur ein Fahrstreifen befahrbar, an der Behebung des Schadens wurde gearbeitet." The repair work was expected to last until around 5 p.m. according to the announcement. By Sunday morning, traffic backed up for two to three kilometers despite low traffic volume, as reported.
