After CSD attack: Brandenburg's Interior Minister Redmann calls for stricter car rental rules

Redmann pointed to an observation he described as new: in left-wing extremism, right-wing extremism, and Islamism, perpetrators are getting younger and the willingness to use violence among very young perpetrators is increasing sharply. "Wir nehmen sowohl im Links - als auch im Rechtsextremismus und im Islamismus wahr, dass die Täter immer jünger werden und die Gewaltbereitschaft bei sehr jungen Tätern stark zunimmt." This was a phenomenon that did not exist in this way a few years ago.

The minister also stated that he himself would act cautiously in certain situations in the future. He did not provide details. The announcement was made on the sidelines of security consultations with regard to the CSD and other major events.

Exchange with security authorities

The Brandenburg Interior Ministry said it was in contact with the Federal Criminal Police Office (BKA) and other security authorities. The BKA had been involved in the investigations surrounding the attack at the CSD in recent days, as several media outlets reported. A BKA spokeswoman did not initially comment further on this.

The attack had attracted attention beyond the capital region. Federal and state politicians called for consequences, including stricter controls on the rental of vehicles. Redmann's proposal targets exactly that.

How such a procedure could look in practice, Redmann left open. From his perspective, a comparison with Gefährder lists or an obligation for landlords to report to the security authorities would be conceivable. However, this would need to be legally examined, he said.

Within the state government in Potsdam, the project is supported according to ministry circles. It remains open whether the topic will be debated in the Bundesrat or the Bundestag. What is clear is that Brandenburg wants to push for a nationwide solution.

Investigations into the attack

On the sidelines of the CSD in Berlin, an attack on participants had occurred according to current findings. The Berlin police and public prosecutor's office are investigating. Details on the course of events and possible backgrounds have not been made public by the authorities so far. The Deutsche Presse-Agentur (dpa) and the Märkische Allgemeine Zeitung (MAZ) reported.

Redmann emphasized that the protection of events such as the CSD was a task for society as a whole. Brandenburg would continue to coordinate with Berlin and the federal government.

The debate about stricter rental rules for cars is part of a broader discussion about security at major events. Redmann announced that he wanted to put the topic on the agenda at the next meetings of the Conference of Interior Ministers.
