Following Germany's surprising defeat in the election for the UN Security Council, Federal Chancellor Friedrich Merz has announced Germany's renewed candidacy for the 2035/36 period, pledging to prepare the bid thoroughly and with a long-term perspective this time.
Federal Chancellor Friedrich Merz announced on the sidelines of the EU-Western Balkans Summit in Montenegro that Germany will once again apply for a non-permanent seat on the United Nations Security Council. This time, the application targets the 2035/36 period – significantly later than the originally sought seat, which was lost in the first round of voting. Merz stated that the Federal Republic will "prepare the candidacy well from the outset, with a longer-term perspective."
