Nearly 17 years after the crash of Air France flight AF447 that killed 228 people, a Paris court has convicted both Air France and Airbus of manslaughter.

The court ruled that the companies were 'solely and completely responsible' for the 2009 disaster, overturning a 2023 acquittal.

Both companies received the maximum fine of €225,000 (US$261,720) for corporate manslaughter, though critics have called the penalties token given the companies' revenues.

The Airbus A330 crashed into the Atlantic Ocean on June 1, 2009, while flying from Rio de Janeiro to Paris after encountering a storm front.

Among the 228 victims were passengers from 33 countries, including 28 Germans.
