Lufthansa: Stock Weaker Ahead of Start of Germanwings Trial

The stock of the Frankfurt DAX-listed company has been moving within a comparatively narrow corridor for months. On 24 March 2015, he deliberately flew the Airbus operated by the airline Germanwings, a Lufthansa subsidiary, into a mountain in the French Alps with 150 people on board.

In addition to civil suits brought by relatives, which were pending, among other places, in Düsseldorf, the Braunschweig public prosecutor's office has brought charges following extensive investigations. The proceedings have echoes as far as Barcelona, where the public prosecutor's office conducted parallel investigations of its own and 150 relatives have been admitted as co-plaintiffs. The Federal Republic of Germany is also named as a participant in the proceedings.

The opening of the trial comes at a time when Lufthansa is operationally on a growth course. In recent quarters, the group has benefited from persistently high demand in air travel and has further expanded its route network. According to analysts, the valuation of the stock is increasingly guided not only by operational metrics but also by extraordinary burdens such as ongoing legal disputes.

Should the trial result in a conviction, observers expect additional damages payments and a debate over reforms in pilot selection and medical monitoring. In the event of an acquittal or a discontinuation of the proceedings, the chapter could lose significance from the investors' perspective. As long as the outcome remains open, the Lufthansa stock remains a title that reacts more strongly than other DAX-listed stocks to external headlines.

For those directly affected, however, the focus is not on the share price but on the question of accountability and clarification. Relatives of the victims have stressed repeatedly in recent years that the review of the disaster remains a central concern for them.
