A Lufthansa Airbus touched down short of the runway threshold during landing at Munich Airport on Monday afternoon; the German Federal Bureau of Aircraft Accident Investigation (BFU) is investigating.
The incident occurred on 18 August 2026 at around 17:41 at Munich Airport. As the Federal Bureau of Aircraft Accident Investigation (BFU) announced, a Lufthansa Airbus touched down short of the intended runway threshold during landing. The authority initially did not publish information regarding the flight number, route origin, or the number of passengers on board.
According to initial findings, this was an extraordinary landing in which the aircraft contacted the runway surface noticeably before the intended touchdown point. Such an event is referred to in aviation as a "hard landing short of the threshold" or, in English jargon, as an "undershoot," and can have various causes such as gusts, an excessive approach speed, or a technical problem.
