Two NASA astronauts swapped out a roughly 90-kilogram joint on the International Space Station's robotic arm during a spacewalk lasting approximately seven hours, the US space agency NASA announced. For Jessica Meir, it was her fifth spacewalk; for Chris Williams, his second.

Background

The spacewalk was the second for Chris Williams and the fifth for Jessica Meir, NASA said. In total, it marked the 280th spacewalk associated with the ISS.

The robotic arms on the ISS are used, among other things, for the docking of spacecraft. The joint that was replaced is part of this system and is of central importance for the station's operation.

According to NASA, the astronauts left the ISS for approximately seven hours. During that time, they worked outside a station module on the roughly 90-kilogram component.
