Ammonia leak at Eisenstadt sports center: Nine slightly injured and large-scale cordon

Six of the slightly injured were taken to Eisenstadt Hospital by ambulance as a precaution, and three others were taken to the hospital in Wiener Neustadt. According to police and city hall, all those affected have since been able to leave the hospital and are continuing to receive care at home.

Injured and medical care

The injured were young adults, according to police. A total of nine people sustained minor injuries, the State Police Directorate announced. A spokesperson for the authority stated that all originally hospitalized persons had since been released into home care.

"Das Areal rund um den Bad-Kissingen-Platz ist großräumig gesperrt", the Burgenland State Security Center announced on Monday. The cordon was lifted again at 7:00 a.m. on Monday, the authority further informed.

Fire department operation

A total of 50 firefighters were deployed. They stopped the leak through cooling and ventilation measures, according to operational reports. Initial on-site measurements confirmed the release of ammonia.

"Die Ursache für den Ammoniak-Austritt ist noch nicht bekannt", the State Police Directorate stated. According to current findings, a supply line to the ice rink was defective, which is believed to have triggered the leak. The exact circumstances are still being investigated.

Cause and repair

According to police statements to the APA, the leak has since been stopped and there is no further danger. The repair of the line has been completed, so the facility no longer poses a risk.

The surrounding schools HAK/HAS and HTL, as well as the special needs school, remained closed on Monday as a precaution. This was intended to prevent pupils from entering the potentially affected area.

School closures and cordon

The Burgenland State Security Center had publicly announced the cordon on Monday. During the course of the morning, the cordon at Bad-Kissingen-Platz was gradually lifted after measurements confirmed that the air quality was safe.

For the young people affected, the incident ended mildly: all of the slightly injured were able to leave the hospital the same day. Medical care was provided by rescue teams from neighboring hospitals as well as emergency physicians.

The City of Eisenstadt and the emergency services praised the prudent behavior of the young people. They had immediately called the emergency services after noticing the pungent smell, thereby enabling a rapid response from the rescue teams.

Reactions and investigations

Residents were asked to give the area around Bad-Kissingen-Platz a wide berth during the cordon. Road traffic was also temporarily affected, the State Security Center announced.

The police announced that investigations into the exact cause of the line damage would continue. Indications of third-party fault or technical failure in the ice rink's refrigeration system would be examined, it was stated.
