Another suspect in Nord Stream case arrested in Croatia

The attacks on the Nord Stream pipelines caused severe gas leaks in the Baltic Sea on September 26, 2022. In total, three of the four pipeline strings of the Nord Stream 1 and Nord Stream 2 pipelines, which had been built to transport natural gas between Russia and Germany, were damaged in the explosions.

In the weeks and months that followed, the incident triggered an intense diplomatic crisis. Several European governments, including the German one, spoke of a possible state background. Russia denied any involvement of its own and pointed to Western intelligence services as possible perpetrators.

The investigations in Germany are being led by the Federal Public Prosecutor's Office, which is responsible for particularly serious criminal cases. In earlier statements, it had emphasized that the matter was classified as grave with regard to the security of energy supply in Europe and the integrity of critical infrastructure.

Investigations and charges

The authorities are investigating the case on suspicion of anti-constitutional sabotage and destruction of important infrastructure. If convicted, the accused face lengthy prison sentences under German law.

In the past, searches and arrests had already been carried out across Europe in connection with the attacks. The German investigators had cooperated with authorities in several European countries, including Poland and Italy.

With the latest arrest, the number of accused in the proceedings continues to rise. The Federal Public Prosecutor's Office announced that it would consistently pursue the case further. At the same time, it will be examined whether an extradition request will be made to Croatia in order to transfer the suspect to Germany.

The case is considered one of the most complex investigation proceedings in recent German judicial history. In addition to clarifying the individual involvement in the crime, the question of possible instigators is also at the center of the investigations.
