Magdeburg, July 01, 2026

In the trial concerning the attack on the Magdeburg Christmas market, the defense of the convicted Taleb A. has filed an appeal against the verdict of the Magdeburg Regional Court, the court announced to the German Press Agency on Wednesday.

The appeal means that the Federal Court of Justice must now review the case for legal errors. As the court further announced, „a court spokesperson stated," the legal remedy was filed within the deadline. The Federal Court of Justice must therefore review the verdict on the attack in Magdeburg for possible legal errors.

Background of the crime

The Magdeburg Regional Court had found the 51-year-old defendant guilty on June 26, among other charges, of murder in six cases and attempted murder in more than 200 cases, and sentenced him to life in prison. The court had found the 51-year-old guilty the previous week and established the particular severity of guilt. This makes early release from prison after 15 years virtually impossible.
