Arbö Expects Traffic Jams on Austrian Highways Due to Returning Travelers and Sporting Events

In addition, the Arbö names the Fern Pass Road (B179), the Lofer Road (B178), and the Zillertal Road (B169) as congestion hotspots. Many vacationers travel to and from Tyrol on these routes.

As reasons for the increased traffic volume, the Arbö cites the return of vacation travelers as well as several sporting events in tourism regions. According to the club, the Wörthersee Road, Tauern Autobahn, and Zillertal Road are among the particularly heavily burdened arteries.

Hotspots in Salzburg, Tyrol, and Carinthia

According to the club, the situation will be intensified by travel traffic toward Salzburg, Zell am See, and Velden am Wörthersee. Denser traffic is also to be expected in Carinthia and Tyrol.

The Arbö advises drivers to plan for longer travel times, to schedule breaks, and to follow current traffic reports in order to avoid congestion as much as possible.

Arbö Tips for Travelers

The warning applies for several days, as the return-travel wave from the summer vacation regions is still ongoing according to the Arbö. Delays may occur especially at the interchange points between the highways.

The club emphasizes that the mentioned routes are not affected continuously, but in sections. The actual extent will also depend on the weather and on peak times of day.

Commuters and travelers are asked to switch to early morning or late evening hours if possible. Alternatively, the Arbö recommends forming car pools or using public transportation.

Overall, the automobile club expects one of the last heavy travel weekends of summer 2026. After the end of the summer holidays in several federal states, traffic volume on the mentioned routes is likely to decline noticeably again.
