Argentine national team players caused a stir with a political banner on the long-running Falklands issue following their 2:1 victory in the World Cup semifinal against England in Atlanta, which could now result in FIFA proceedings.

The semifinal between Argentina and England took place in Atlanta and ended with a 2:1 win for the Argentine team. Immediately after the final whistle, Argentine players Lisandro Martinez and Giovani Lo Celso unfurled a banner in the stadium reading "Las Malvinas son argentinas" – in English: "The Malvinas are Argentine." In doing so, they publicly took a stance in the decades-long territorial dispute between Argentina and Great Britain.

The action stands in clear contradiction to FIFA regulations, which prohibit political and religious messages during the tournament. As ZDF reported, "widerspricht das dem FIFA-Reglement und dürfte ein Nachspiel haben". At the time of reporting, the world football association had not yet issued an official statement, but disciplinary consequences are expected.

Background: The Falklands Conflict

The scene throws a spotlight on the undiminished explosiveness of the Falklands conflict, which has weighed on Argentina and Great Britain for decades. Argentina has long laid claim to the islands referred to as the "Malvinas," located a few hundred kilometers off the Argentine coast and belonging to the British colonial empire. Great Britain continues to administer the territory as an overseas territory to this day.
