Risks for employees and road users

Asfinag CEO Tamara Christ explains the risks: "Unsere Mitarbeitenden sammeln den Müll mit Tagesbaustellen auf – das ist immer ein gewisses Risiko für die Kolleginnen und Kollegen. Weil diese Arbeit im Fließverkehr erfolgt, ist bei den Verkehrsteilnehmenden große Aufmerksamkeit gefragt. Und achtlos entsorgter Müll auf der Fahrbahn gefährdet nicht nur die Asfinag-Mitarbeitenden, sondern eben auch alle anderen Verkehrsteilnehmenden".

Another major problem is the illegal dumping of household waste or construction debris. Sometimes entire pieces of furniture or car tires end up next to the roadway. "Einfach nur, weil man sich die Müllentsorgungsgebühr sparen wolle oder es bequemer sei, hieß es seitens der Asfinag."

Campaign draws attention to staff

To draw attention to the dangers and the personal dimension of the work, the campaign "Meine Mama/mein Papa arbeiten für dich. Danke, dass du auf sie aufpasst" was launched in summer. The ministry, Asfinag and the ÖAMTC want to draw attention to the fact that the work on the highways and expressways is carried out by people.

Behind the figures is an ongoing battle against carelessly discarded objects, which burdens the roads, the environment and the people who work there equally. Even small packaging, cigarette butts and beverage cans repeatedly end up directly at the side of the road and have to be removed under difficult conditions.
