At Least 18 Dead After Landslide at Waste Dump in Guinea

Eyewitnesses gave consistent accounts of a loud rumble, followed by a wave of mud, water, and waste that swept through several houses within a matter of seconds. Residents rushed to the scene using the most basic of means to dig out those who had been buried, even before the first rescue units arrived.

The prefect of the region, Lancine Sylla, confirmed the number of recovered dead and announced that a crisis unit had taken over coordination of the rescue operations. At the same time, he called on the population to stay away from the still unstable edge areas of the dump.

Causes and risks of municipal landfills

As of Sunday, it remained unclear how many people were living or working near the dump at the time of the disaster. In informal settlements on the edge of such disposal sites, waste pickers and small-scale traders are frequently also present, and their numbers are difficult to record.

The exact causes of the landslide were not initially known. In the region, critics have long argued that municipal waste dumps are often operated without adequate safety measures and can be transformed into unstable sludge mounds by leachate during the rainy season. Guinea, too, has been hit repeatedly by flooding during the rainy season in the past.

The authorities warned that the death toll could rise further if more bodies are recovered during the ongoing search operations. Relatives waited near the site of the disaster for news of missing family members.

International reactions and announced measures

International aid organizations and neighboring countries were monitoring the situation, but at the time of reporting no information was available on formal offers of assistance from abroad. The initial focus was on recovering survivors and providing for local residents.

The government of Guinea said it would launch an investigation to clarify the cause of the disaster and hold those responsible to account. A provisional closure of the entire dump was ordered.

The tragedy highlights the risks associated with inadequately secured waste dumps in major West African cities. In Conakry, where a large share of the population lives in rapidly growing neighborhoods without formal infrastructure, such slopes have long been known to be at risk.

In earlier similar incidents in the region, including landslides during the rainy season, the Guinean government had requested international support. Whether this would also be the case in the current incident remained initially unclear.
