Heavy rain has flooded parts of Ghana and Côte d'Ivoire; at least 24 people lost their lives and nearly 40,000 others lost their homes, according to the government.

The floods are hitting the West African coastal region with unusual force during the rainy season. In Ghana, Interior Minister Mohammed Mubarak Muntaka speaks of the worst floods in years. "Nearly 8,000 households are affected. Almost 40,000 people have lost their homes," he said. Some people are still reported missing.

In Côte d'Ivoire as well, the situation has worsened according to the government. Since the start of the rainy season in May, 59 people have lost their lives, authorities said. In the affected districts, houses are underwater, roads are impassable, and the power supply has been disrupted in several neighborhoods.
