Santa Clara, June 26, 2026
Australia and Paraguay drew 0-0 in their final Group D match, completing their joint qualification for the knockout round of the World Cup.
In Santa Clara, the Group D fixture ended without goals on Thursday. Australia secured advancement to the next round with the draw, while Paraguay finishes the group stage with four points and can still hope for a place as one of the best eight third-placed teams.
Australia's third knockout round at a World Cup
For the Australians, it was already the third time reaching a World Cup knockout round after the 2006 and 2022 tournaments. The team led by coach Anthony Popovic, ranked 37th in the world, is therefore once again on the verge of a historic achievement.
The match began promisingly for Australia. As early as the 4th minute, Jackson Irvine had an early scoring opportunity, but his shot was saved by Paraguayan goalkeeper Orlando Gill. Irvine, who as captain of FC St. Pauli had been relegated from the Bundesliga in the past season, remained largely ineffectual afterwards, as did the entire Australian attack.
