The Turkish national team suffered a 0:2 defeat against Australia in Vancouver on its return to the World Cup stage, while Scotland celebrated a 1:0 victory against Haiti in Boston the day before.
Çalhanoğlu's Words and the Reality on the Pitch
Turkey missed its third consecutive World Cup opener and sits on zero points after the first matchday in Group D. Captain Hakan Çalhanoğlu had spoken before the match about his team being "more talented" than Australia and that it would "dominate" the game, but little of that was to be seen on the pitch in Vancouver at first.
Turkey did create chances: Abdülkerim Bardakcı struck the post with a powerful long-range shot as early as the 30th minute. The Turks continued to push for an equalizer thereafter but were repeatedly denied by Australian goalkeeper Patrick Beach. The keeper parried, among others, a dangerous free kick from Arda Güler in the 57th minute and another from Hakan Çalhanoğlu in the 86th minute.
