Canberra, June 28, 2026
The Australian government has announced that it will double the penalties for major technology companies because they are only insufficiently implementing the ban on social media for under-16s, introduced six months ago.
Communications Minister Anika Wells said on Saturday that the Australian government would raise the maximum fine for systematic violations from 49.5 million to 99 million Australian dollars, which at the current exchange rate is equivalent to around 60 million euros. The move followed a review that showed the age limit, which only came into force in December 2025, has so far had little effect.
