Prime Minister Anthony Albanese has announced in a policy speech at the University of Sydney the establishment of a central AI office as well as nationally binding standards for AI data centers and tightened copyright protection.
Albanese presented the plans on Tuesday in a programmatic speech at the University of Sydney. The new entity is to be called the Office of AI and will be located within the Prime Minister's and Cabinet department, as Australian media reported, citing the speech.
The AI office is intended, according to the government's wishes, to coordinate government work on issues such as education, the labor market, climate and energy, copyright, and defense. Australia is thereby consolidating its AI policy in a single central location within the heart of government.
