Austria Arrests Six in Nationwide Crackdown on Islamist Extremism

During the house searches, investigators seized mobile phones, data storage devices, laptops, folding knives, combat knives, documents, and relevant clothing items. The seized electronic devices and data storage media must now be evaluated, authorities said.

Coordinated Action Across Agencies

The Joint Action Day involved the DSN, all nine State Offices for State Protection and Extremism Combating (LSE), and the General Directorate for the Prison System and Measures Involving Deprivation of Liberty within the Ministry of Justice. Within 24 hours, the constitutional protection agency also conducted ten endangerer addresses (Gefährderansprachen) and three security dialogues.

Interior Minister Gerhard Karner (ÖVP) emphasized the government's resolve. "Extremists are fought with all determination to protect our democracy," Karner said in a press release. He added that the fight against Islamist extremism is one of the absolute priorities of security police work.

Justice Minister Anna Sporrer (SPÖ) highlighted the inter-agency cooperation. "The 'Joint Action Day' clearly shows how important cooperation between correctional facilities, public prosecutors' offices, and security authorities is," Sporrer said, thanking all those involved.

Rising Online Radicalization

State Secretary for State Protection Jörg Leichtfried (SPÖ) described Islamist extremism as one of the greatest threats to the country. "With the decisive and targeted intervention of the constitutional protection agency and the judiciary, we show that there is no place for extremism in Austria," Leichtfried stated.

DSN Director Sylvia Mayer pointed to a rising trend in radicalization. "Actions like this are an important component in the fight against Islamist extremism and terrorism, where we recognize a rising trend, not least due to accelerated online radicalization," Mayer said. She added that the task of the constitutional protection agency is to act as an early warning system to identify potential dangers in advance and to take action against them.

Broader Security Context

The operation was set in motion in May and also included numerous cell searches in correctional facilities on persons incarcerated for terrorist offenses. The broader security context included the Eurovision Song Contest (ESC), which took place in Vienna and posed a challenge for state security authorities.

Since mid-April, in connection with the ESC, authorities conducted 140 reporting obligations (Meldeverpflichtungen), more than 40 endangerer addresses, and 15 security dialogues. The focus of these ESC security measures was in the Lower Austria and Vienna area.
