Vienna, Austria — May 13, 2026 Hantavirus outbreak 2026: Austria expands reporting rules Austria’s health ministry has expanded mandatory reporting rules for hantavirus infections after a human-to-human transmission outbreak aboard the cruise ship "Hondius" in the Atlantic.
Expanded Reporting and Precautions
The Austrian Health Ministry announced the new measures in response to the outbreak, which involved confirmed cases of hantavirus infections transmitted between passengers.
Authorities are urging the public to avoid large gatherings, medical facilities, and nursing homes where the virus could spread more easily. They also recommend wearing FFP2 masks in crowded indoor spaces when possible.
