Vienna, Austria — May 16, 2026
Austrian authorities are intensively tracking a third low-risk contact person after a Hantavirus outbreak on the MV Hondius cruise ship, while confirming no current cases in the country.
Outbreak Origins and Current Status
The Hantavirus outbreak has been traced to the MV Hondius cruise ship, where three deaths and eleven confirmed infections were reported as of May 13, according to the World Health Organization (WHO). All passengers were evacuated on May 12 after days of deliberation. The WHO has stated it does not foresee a new coronavirus pandemic arising from this outbreak.
No Austrians were aboard the infected cruise ship, but three Austrian nationals were on a KLM flight from Johannesburg to Amsterdam with an individual who later died from Hantavirus. Two of these contacts have been identified and are considered low-risk, showing no symptoms. The third remains unlocated, and it is unclear whether they are still in Austria.
