Health authorities in Austria are working to track all possible contacts linked to the outbreak. Identified low-risk individuals have been advised to self-monitor for symptoms for six weeks and to report any changes in location to health officials. They are also instructed to avoid large gatherings, medical facilities, nursing homes, and crowded indoor spaces, while wearing FFP2 masks when necessary.

The risk of infection for these contacts is deemed "extremely low," according to health officials. The second identified contact had no prolonged exposure to the infected individual on the flight. Austria has expanded its reporting requirements for suspected Hantavirus cases to prepare for potential human-to-human transmission.

Symptoms and Health Measures

Initial Hantavirus symptoms often resemble severe flu, including fever, headaches, muscle pain, nausea, and dizziness. In severe cases, respiratory issues such as coughing and shortness of breath may develop days later. The Andes virus strain, in particular, can lead to fluid accumulation in the lungs, resulting in severe respiratory and circulatory failure.

Austria has mandated reporting of suspected Hantavirus cases since last week, emphasizing early detection and containment. Health authorities urge anyone experiencing symptoms to seek immediate medical attention while avoiding unnecessary contact with others.
