Vienna, Austria — May 13, 2026
Austria's coalition government has finalized plans to extend mandatory vehicle inspection intervals, marking one of 160 deregulation measures introduced by State Secretary Josef Schellhorn (NEOS) in late 2025. The new rules, colloquially known as the "Pickerl" system, will take effect by January 2027 and apply universally to all registered vehicles.
New Inspection Intervals
Under the current system, passenger vehicles in Austria undergo their first inspection three years after initial registration, followed by another after two years, and then annually (the 3-2-1 rule). The revised framework delays the first inspection to four years, followed by biennial checks until the vehicle reaches ten years of age, after which annual inspections resume (4-2-2-2-1).
