The Austrian Nationalrat on Tuesday voted, against the votes of the Greens, to significantly extend the inspection intervals for the periodic vehicle inspection ("Pickerl") and at the same time placed Ukrainian vehicles on an equal footing with Austrian rules.

The new intervals at a glance

The amendment changes the time intervals at which cars and light utility vehicles in Austria must undergo the recurring inspection under § 57a of the Motor Vehicle Act. Instead of the previous sequence – first three years after registration, then after two years, and annually thereafter – the intervals 4:2:2:1 will now apply. Specifically, this means: the first inspection is due four years after initial registration, the second two years later, a third after a further two years, and only then is an annual inspection required.

This also significantly pushes back the point at which vehicles enter the annual obligation. Whereas cars previously had to be inspected every year from the fifth year after initial registration, this will now only happen from the eighth year onward. Infrastructure Minister Peter Hanke (SPÖ) sees this as a relief for citizens. With the reform, many owners would have to go to a workshop or inspection center less often, without any compromise on road safety, Hanke said in the plenary session.
