A legislative proposal to change the intervals for Austria's mandatory §57a vehicle inspection, commonly known as the 'Pickerl', would require approximately two million vehicle owners to make an additional trip to an inspection center, the ÖAMTC motoring club warned on Friday.

The review period for the reform ends at the end of May, and the Nationalrat is expected to pass the change from the current 3-2-1 system to a new 4-2-2-2-1 system before the summer recess. The government intends the reform to reduce bureaucracy and provide financial relief for drivers, a goal that has been praised by the Chamber of Commerce.

However, the ÖAMTC and the Federal Guild of Vehicle Technicians have raised significant concerns. Bernhard Wiesinger, the head of consumer advocacy at ÖAMTC, described the proposal as fundamentally welcome but 'not thought through.'
