The Austrian National Council adopted late on Monday evening an amendment to the Motor Vehicle Act that significantly extends the intervals for the periodic vehicle inspection, known as the "Pickerl," and fully equates Ukrainian vehicles with Austrian regulations.
The new intervals at a glance
The new interval scheme is 4:2:2:1 years. Anyone registering a newly licensed car will in the future only have to undergo the first inspection after four years instead of three. This is followed by two further inspections at intervals of two years each. Only from the eighth year after first registration is the annual check mandatory, whereas previously this was already the case from the fifth year. "Nunmehr werden die Intervalle ausgedehnt auf 4:2:2:1," the explanatory statement to the decision reads.
The amendment passed the plenary against the votes of the Greens. A coalition of ÖVP, SPÖ, NEOS and FPÖ prevailed, placing the relief of drivers at the forefront. Infrastructure Minister Peter Hanke (SPÖ) explicitly sees the new regulation as an easing for citizens, without traffic safety suffering as a result.
