Austria's grain harvest shrinks as drought and heat pressure farmers

Moosbrugger used the briefing to call on European Union policymakers to respond. He urged adjustments to the Common Agricultural Policy (GAP) framework to better reflect the rising frequency of climate-driven crop losses and to provide faster, more targeted compensation for affected producers.

The LKÖ also wants Brussels to expand investment support for irrigation infrastructure, drought-resistant seed varieties, and soil-conservation measures. Farmers say such investments are now essential to keep Austria's domestic grain production viable as average temperatures rise and weather extremes become more routine.

A wider European picture

Austria is not alone in confronting these pressures. Across central and southern Europe, 2026 has brought unusually hot and dry conditions, and several producer organizations have already signaled reduced harvest forecasts. Analysts say converging shortfalls in multiple countries could tighten regional grain supply and put additional upward pressure on feed and food prices later this year.

Domestically, the Chamber of Agriculture is coordinating with regional chambers to assess damage and to advise farmers on agronomic measures, including adjusted harvest timing and the use of crop residues to retain soil moisture. Moosbrugger said the immediate priority was to document losses so that any future aid can be distributed quickly.

Looking ahead, farmers and policymakers are watching the weather closely: further prolonged heat without significant rainfall would deepen yield losses, while a sustained shift to wetter conditions could still allow partially recovering crops to deliver a less damaging, though still below-average, harvest.
