Austria's public health insurer ÖGK has welcomed new regulations that bring tobacco-free nicotine products including nicotine pouches, toothpicks and snuff powder under the country's existing tobacco-control framework.

The Austrian Health Insurance Fund (ÖGK) said the updated rules, which took effect under the revised Tobacco and Non-Smoker Protection Act (TNRSG), close a regulatory gap that had allowed newer nicotine products to fall outside traditional tobacco legislation. Under the new framework, products described in the law as "tabakfreie Nikotinerzeugnisse wie Nikotinbeutel, Nikotinzahnstocher oder Nikotinschnupfpulver" are now subject to the same advertising, sales and labelling requirements as conventional tobacco items.
