Inflation in Austria accelerated in August 2026 to reach 3.2%, compared with 2.0% the previous month, according to official figures published by the national statistics office.
The office Statistik Austria confirmed that the consumer price index rose to 3.2% year-on-year in August, a sharp increase from the rate of 2.0% recorded in July 2026. This acceleration represents one of the steepest monthly jumps observed in the eurozone since the start of the year, and comes as the European Central Bank (ECB) continues its monetary policy under close scrutiny.
A surprise acceleration after several months of decline
Economists surveyed following the release point mainly to the energy component. Energy prices, after several months of relative moderation, rose in August, pulling the overall index upward. Items related to food and hospitality also contributed to the increase, to a lesser extent, according to the initial details released by Statistik Austria.
