According to the new National Defense Report 2026/2027, the Austrian Armed Forces are missing a total of around 12.6 billion euros by 2031 in order to fulfill the ten-year build-up plan that was adopted following the Russian attack on Ukraine in 2022.

The report, submitted to the National Council on Friday, shows that the gap between the funds required and those actually provided will already widen significantly in the coming years. The gap amounts to around 1.075 billion euros in 2027 and rises to 1.917 billion euros in 2028. "Noch deutlich weiter auseinander geht die Schere ab 2030", the report states.

According to the budget forecast of the Ministry of Defense, 8.57 billion euros would have to be available for the Armed Forces in 2030 to fulfill the build-up plan, while the federal financial framework provides for only 5.39 billion for 2030. This corresponds to a difference of several billion euros in a single year.
